Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix is a video game created by Raven Software, a sequel to Soldier of Fortune. It was developed using the Quake III: Team Arena engine. Once again, Raven hired John Mullins to act as a consultant on the game. Based on comments and criticisms of the original game, Raven Software developed Soldier of Fortune II to be a more “realistic” game, with tactical shooters like Operation Flashpoint and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six as inspirations rather than Quake. A sequel titled Soldier of Fortune: Payback, made by Cauldron HQ was released for Microsoft Windows, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2007.

The series’ focal point, graphic depiction of human bodily dismemberment, makes another appearance in Soldier of Fortune II. GHOUL 2.0, as the new engine was called, features 36 gore zones, allowing for increasingly detailed depictions of gore and carnage. A shot to the head could now blow away a chunk of scalp and expose the dripping brain beneath, and blown-off limbs revealed jutting bones and spurting blood. At the same time, the gore was fashioned more believably, stylistically, than in the original game. More firepower is required to dismember or inflict open wounds.
Designed as a tactical shooter, the player character is more vulnerable to enemy fire, and while he can still survive more than a dozen bullets thanks to his body armor, a single explosion can kill him instantly. Additionally, weapon recoil makes automatic firearms increasingly inaccurate as they are fired, so if the player runs around firing continuously he or she will have difficulty hitting enemies. Running into the middle of a firefight will usually get the player killed, and game play requires ducking behind cover and leaning around corners to take shots.
The enemy A.I. was significantly upgraded from the original title, and fires from cover and uses squad-based tactics rather than simply charging straight at the player.
Unlike the original game, there are no futuristic weapons or sci-fi elements. The most advanced weapon encountered is the OICW, which is based on a former weapon prototype of the United States military. Hit damage is more realistic; enemies do not absorb much fire before dying.

You play as a high-priced mercenary working for “The Shop.” There’s the promise of a more engrossing story than in the previous two iterations of Soldier of Fortune, but really, who cares? You won’t be playing Payback for the story. No, you’re going to play Payback for the high death count and mind-boggling gore. This is not a game for the faint of heart. But, if you’re a gamer playing FPS’s, you’re probably not faint of heart. If you get giddy just thinking about explosions sending body parts flying over your head, then Payback is probably perfect for you.
The controls are pretty much straight from Call of Duty, with one trigger (or mouse button) aiming down the sight and the other used for primary fire. As you’d expect, you have grenades to toss and the occasional weapon with an under-mounted grenade launcher as secondary fire. None of the actual set-up is new to the genre. So on the surface you may gander at Soldier of Fortune: Payback and think, “Eh, been there, done that.” Then you start shooting people and suddenly the uniqueness of Payback shines through.
There doesn’t seem to be a single body part that can’t be separated from a body. The bullet from a SAW can tear off an enemy’s leg at the kneecap. But he won’t die instantly from this. He’ll fall to the ground and either shoot at you in desperation or try to crawl to safety. If you leave him be, eventually he’ll bleed out. But you can have fun and slowly dismember him with your weaponry. One time, just by chance, I shot a guy’s hand off from 50 yards away. Unlike most shooters which switch to ragdoll once an enemy is dead, Payback uses ragdoll while an enemy is wounded (but still breathing). You can shoot a guy in the neck and he will hold his throat as it spurts blood. He’ll stumble forward, bump into things, and generally look like a guy who was just shot in the neck.
Playing a few sections from a small sampling of levels proved that it takes a lot of bullets to kill an enemy. A headshot will, of course, cause instant death (or decapitation with the right gun and proper aim). Otherwise, unless you get some clean shots to the chest, you will often have an enemy that won’t die easily. Good thing it’s so much fun pumping extra bullets into bodies.
You’ll have considerable options for your death spree. At the start of each mission, you can choose from a sizeable list of primary and secondary weapons, as well as a sidearm. There are more than 40 real-world weapons in the game. Many of these can be further modified with scopes, special ammo, and more. The weapons were carefully researched to create some semblance of realism amidst the almost cartoonish violence. Now, I should mention that the violence seen in the game is actually toned down from real-life examples the development team witnessed while doing research for this title. But in terms of videogame violence, it’s pretty extreme.

This has already been patched with the v1.1 Vista patch so it should now work perfectly on Vista systems.
